Preserving the memories of childhood

By Gill Mccowen of Journal Craft

"What happened to those years? It doesn't seem that long ago that the children were taking those first tentative steps, now they are moving on to secondary (high) school. Yet so much has happened in the intervening years - I want to remember it all..."

But, will you? Will you really remember their favourite toy when they were 4, the Christmas decorations they so lovingly made, or the funny anecdote that happened at the playgoup? Time flies so fast and memories fade. So how do you capture those precious memories?

By keeping a visual journal you can keep a permanent record of those special moments. Write down your memories and accompany your notes with something visual - your mind is far more attracted to a page with a visual element. You do not have to be an artist - if you really feel artistically challenged then you can always cut and paste in photos. But remember, it's not about creating great art, its about creating memories...

So true, even the freshest memories and most obvious facts become obscured by the cobwebs of time. I've found it hard to keep a diary ever since I landed my first job. This "visual diary" thing is a terrific idea. Gotta try it out!
